Community Outreach
The men and women of Local 478 are committed to the cities and towns in Connecticut, where we live and work every day. We participate in our communities through a variety of civic and philanthropic activities that are an important part our organizations culture.
Charitable and Civic Organizations
Local 478 members routinely volunteer their time and talents to charitable and civic organizations as well as other worthy causes across Connecticut. These include Habitat for Humanity, Hannah's Dream playground in New Haven, community athletic fields in Cheshire, Plymouth, Middlefield and Ansonia, Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, bocce and basketball courts for the Special Olympic World Games, Easter Seal's Fantasy of Lights in New Haven, and CT Trees of Honor in Middletown.
Boards and Commissions
Members of Local 478 volunteer for boards and commissions throughout the state. These include boards of finance, town councils, regional boards of education and the state of Connecticut Crane Licensing Board.
Community Programs and Events
Local 478 is honored to provide scholarship opportunities each year to our members and their children to help with the costs of advanced education. We also work with Helmets to Hardhats, this program helps U.S. soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen transfer their experience and can-do attitudes into secure jobs within the construction industry. Helmets to Hardhats helps ease the difficult passage into civilian life for military families, providing the best career opportunities, pay and benefits to those who have earned our support for their years of service and sacrifice.
Outreach Training Program
Local 478's Training School is proud to offer its unique outreach program, which recruits members from a variety of unemployed and underemployed backgrounds and provides an opportunity for participants to become informed about a career with the Operating Engineers. Local 478 is a proud partner with the city of Hartford's Capital Workforce Partners/Hartford Construction Initiative (CWP/HCJI), Northwest Regional Investment Board, Building Pathways CT, YouthBuild, and Southeastern CT Investment Board among others.
