Those who pursue this trade discover that a positive job outlook, competitive wages and attractive fringe benefits are only part of the picture. As a Local 478 heavy equipment operating engineer, you will travel throughout Connecticut. You will work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
As an operator, you may have irregular hours, because work on some construction projects continue around the clock, or must be performed late at night or early in the morning. The work is seasonal, so you can expect to be laid off during several of the winter months. Local 478 encourages its heavy equipment operators to maximize their earnings during the busiest times, budget properly and, if necessary, take advantage of the assistance and benefits we offer our members and their families.
History has proven that apprentices who have a strong work ethic and are willing to learn have the chance for a long and successful career.
Pre-apprentice training is available to those individuals who qualify following an extensive interview process. The pre-apprentice training is free of charge to those who qualify and are invited to attend. Pre-apprentices complete 240 hours of training, attending classes Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for six weeks.
After you complete a pre-apprenticeship, the best way to learn skills is to do the work of an operating engineer. Our apprentices pursue field training on actual job sites, where they learn from journey worker operators. Each apprentice accumulates 6,000 hours of combined on-the-job training, classroom training and hands on related training over a period of four years. Apprentice wages start around $25.00+ with $26.00+ in benefits per hour.
